Leaders in Alebtong district have issued a stern warning to head teachers of government-aided schools, threatening arrests and legal action in a bid to curb corruption in the education sector.
The warning follows a Monday incident in which angry parents locked the residence of Peter Odongo, the head teacher of Akwano-ilum Primary School in Omoro subcounty.
The action stemmed from allegations of the disappearance of UGX 5.5 million and the loss of a school lawn mower lodged against Peter Odongo.
Geoffrey Owani, the School Management Committee (SMC) Chairperson of Akwano-ilum Primary School, stated that parents took the drastic measure after the head teacher failed to attend a PTA meeting where he was expected to provide an accountability report on the missing funds.
Alebtong District LCV Chairperson, David Kennedy Odongo, confirmed receiving the report and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
He emphasised that any head teacher found guilty of misappropriating funds will be arrested and prosecuted.
Odongo also urged all school head teachers to work closely with their respective school finance committees under the school management committees to ensure transparency and proper utilisation of public funds.
