Lira University, in partnership with Switzerland-based Amsterdam University, has launched over 2.5 billion shillings project code-named M-Care Project, aimed at supporting the fight against non-communicable diseases.
Associate Prof. Dr. Bernard Omech, who is spearheading the project in Uganda, while speaking at the launch of the project held at Margarita Palace hotel in Lira City said it is also being implemented in other countries such as Kenya and Ghana.
In Uganda, the project will be implemented in Oyam, Kole, Lira District, and Lira City, where research will be conducted on the silent spread of non-communicable diseases within communities.
These areas are said to have the highest burden of Non-Communicable diseases.

Akullu Hilda, the chairperson for persons with mental disabilities in Lira City, welcomed the project and called for the introduction of more initiatives to support their members.
Lira District Health Officer, Dr. Patrick Buchan Ocen, who represented district health officers at the launch, welcomed the project, noting that districts in northern Uganda that experienced insurgencies have many people still battling mental health challenges.
The LCV Chairperson of Kole District, Andrew Moses Awany, thanked Lira University for supporting development in the Lango sub-region.
Awany also called for the promotion of a balanced diet as a way of combating non-communicable diseases.
Lira Resident District Commissioner, Lillian Eyal, hailed government efforts in promoting health services to support the country’s development.
