Lira University, in partnership with Switzerland-based Amsterdam University, has launched a project worth over 2.5 billion shillings, code-named the M-Care Project, aimed at supporting the fight against non-communicable diseases.
Associate Prof. Dr. Bernard Omech, who is leading the project in Uganda, said during the launch held at Margarita Palace Hotel in Lira City that the initiative is also being implemented in other countries, including Kenya and Ghana.
In Uganda, the project will be implemented in Oyam, Kole, Lira District, and Lira City, where research will focus on the silent spread of non-communicable diseases within communities.
These areas are reported to have the highest burden of non-communicable diseases.

Akullu Hilda, the chairperson for persons with mental disabilities in Lira City, welcomed the project and called for the introduction of more initiatives to support their members.
Dr. Patrick Buchan Ocen, the Lira District Health Officer, who represented district health officers at the launch, welcomed the project, noting that districts in northern Uganda affected by past insurgencies still have many people struggling with mental health challenges.
Andrew Moses Awany, the LCV Chairperson of Kole District, thanked Lira University for supporting development in the Lango sub-region.
Awany also urged the promotion of a balanced diet as a means of combating non-communicable diseases.
Lillian Eyal, the Lira Resident District Commissioner, praised government efforts to promote health services in support of the country’s development.
