Agroventure, an agribusiness enterprise providing agricultural services, market access and digital solutions to smallholder farmers, says its investment in climate-smart digital agriculture is transforming service delivery by improving efficiency, transparency and access to markets for farmers in Alebtong.

Speaking to journalists and content creators during a field visit organized by Palladium Group’s Climate Smart Jobs programme in partnership with the Media Challenge Initiative and Infonile at the company’s store in Apala Town Council, Alebtong District, Agroventure Director Isaac Onyilo said the company has shifted from manual, paper-based operations to a digital platform known as Wiigot, which is supporting climate-resilient agricultural services across its value chain.

The company works through organized farmer groups supported by commercial agents who facilitate the distribution of climate-resilient agricultural inputs, produce aggregation, marketing and financial transactions.

According to Onyilo, the Wiigot platform has significantly improved record keeping, reduced transaction errors and strengthened accountability between farmers, agents and the company.

He said the system enables accurate tracking of customer accounts, input purchases, loan repayments and product returns, helping to reduce disputes while improving service delivery to farmers in the face of climate variability.

Despite these gains, Onyilo noted that unreliable rainfall-related connectivity challenges in rural areas and limited digital literacy among some farmers and field agents remain key barriers affecting full adoption of the system.

Beyond digital record management, Agroventure has introduced a grain storage and credit model that allows farmers to safely store produce after harvest and access cash when needed, instead of distress-selling during periods of market glut triggered by seasonal harvest peaks. This enables farmers to benefit from better post-harvest prices while improving household resilience to climate-induced income fluctuations.

Onyilo said the company also emphasizes climate-smart post-harvest handling through grain grading, moisture testing and improved storage practices, which reduce aflatoxin risk, minimize post-harvest losses and improve market competitiveness.

Farmers working with Agroventure continue to receive training in climate-smart agriculture, including conservation agriculture practices, improved agronomic techniques, drought-tolerant seed varieties and appropriate fertilizer use to enhance productivity under changing weather patterns.

The company is also expanding access to agricultural insurance through trained commercial agents working in partnership with the Agro-Insurance Consortium (AIC), helping farmers understand index-based insurance products, coverage conditions and climate risk mitigation mechanisms.

Looking ahead, Onyilo said Agroventure plans to expand its climate-smart digital agriculture services into the Acholi, West Nile and Teso sub-regions over the next five years, with the aim of improving farmer resilience, livelihoods and adaptive capacity through technology-driven services, financial inclusion and reliable market access.

He added that the company is strengthening its monitoring systems to track farmer adoption rates, production volumes and the overall impact of its climate-smart agriculture programme.

Farmers say the digital platform has already begun changing the way they farm.

Ronald Otim, a farmer from Alebtong District, said the system has improved his knowledge of fertilizer application and helped him identify suitable drought-tolerant seed varieties for the two planting seasons.

He added that the Wiigot platform has enabled him to connect with fellow farmers, produce buyers and more reliable markets for his harvest.

Another farmer, Peter Okeng, said the digital system has simplified farming by improving access to climate-resilient agricultural inputs and providing farmers with dependable markets for their produce.
