The Kotido district Production office has registered 5,000 hectares of gardens which have been affected by the current drought across the district.

Sam Richard Erechu, the Kotido district Production Officer says his office collected data from all 19 sub counties in the district and the data is set to be sent to the office of the Prime Minister.

He notes that the affected gardens contained ground nuts, maize, sim-sim, sorghum, millet, green gram, sunflower and vegetables among others.

When converted into cash, the drought has caused a loss of over 200billion shillings to farmers who had invested heavily in terms of cash.

According to Erechu, the lengthy period of drought that has destroyed all the crops which were planted by farmers in the first season, started showing signs of disability in March immediately after its onset.

Currently, farmers are left in desperation as the sun has not spared any crop in the garden including vegetables for the family to survive on.

Erechu added that the comprehensive report is being shared with the office of the prime minister for quicker response.

He therefore urged the population to be calm as they wait for a reply from the Ministry of Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees.
