Leaders in Kotido District have issued a stern warning against poaching, emphasising that the practice undermines both conservation efforts and local economic stability.

The call was made during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Longaroe Sub-County administration block, a project funded by the Karenga Kaabong Agago Kotido Kitgum Abim–KAKKA Community Wildlife Association, using revenue generated from regulated sport hunting activities.

Emmanuel Lodio Lopwot, the Kotido District Speaker, urged residents to abandon poaching in favour of conservation in order to unlock economic opportunities.

Citing the new administration block as a tangible benefit of wildlife tourism, Lodio said that by protecting wildlife, local communities attract responsible hunters whose activities contribute to community development.

Adding to the deterrents, Martin Oryem, who represented the Chief Warden of Kidepo Valley National Park, highlighted the dangers posed by the newly implemented electric fencing project.

Oryem warned that those attempting to enter protected areas illegally risk not only arrest but also fatal encounters with wildlife or electrocution.
