Centenary Bank donates Shs40 million to Karamojo Dioceses emergency relief food

KOTIDO: Centenary Bank Uganda Limited has donated Shs40 million to the dioceses of Kotido Catholic Diocese and North Karamoja for emergency relief food and healthcare for hunger-stricken households as a result of protracted drought.

According to the allocations, Kotido Catholic Diocese got Shs25 million for emergency food and medical care while North Karamoja Diocese received Shs15 million.

The financial support was handed over to the two dioceses by the chairperson board of directors, Gustavio Bwoch Orach Lujwero during his visit to centenary bank, Kotido branch on Thursday, July 23, 2026.  

Monsignor. Daniel Nabuya, the Vicar General of Kotido Catholic Diocese, received a cheque of Shs25 million on behalf of Bishop Rt. Rev. Dominic Eibu.

While handing other the cheque, Gustovio Bwoch Orach Lujwero, who was accompanied by members of the board of directors and staff of Centenary bank Kotido branch said the support is part of the bank’s Social Corporate Responsibility.

The financial support, according him is meant to support beneficiary dioceses purchase relief food and donate to the most vulnurable households in the communities they serve.

He noted that the bank believes in giving back to the community and supporting its customers.

 “Although Centenary Bank is founded on Catholic values, Muslims are among our valued customers, and we have always supported them, the board chairperson”  said.

Bwoch Orach Lujwero said is quite unfortunate to witness the food shortage crisis that Karamoja communities are experiencing amidst other ongoing socio-economic issues.

The centenary bank manager for Kotido branch Jhanan Obong, said that the two dioceses form the biggest number of their clients.

According to him, a majority staff working with catholic and anglican institutions in Kotido district bank with centenary bank.

He said that the bank has built a good working relationship with the two dioceses and other institutions operating in their catchment area.

In his remarks, Bishop Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira an Apostolic Administrator for Kabale Diocese, who represents the Uganda Episcopal Conference at the board, called on government, development partners and religious leaders, in Karamoja Sub-region to find solutions to problems facing the people they serve.

He emphasised the need for long-term investments in irrigation, water harvesting, and modern agriculture for the Karamoja sub-region to permanently stop recurring hunger.

“Karamoja deserves more than emergency aid, it needs long term investments in irrigation, water infrastructure, climate resilient agriculture, healthcare, education, and sustainable livelihoods so that families can withstand drought without depending on food relief year after year” Bishop Rubaramira.

Mssngr. Daniel Nabuya and Bishop Simon Aisu Akol, lauded Centenary Bank for its generous financial donations and strong corporate social responsibility.

 “As the bishops in North Karamoja, we value your the support towards the  Church and the community”, the two top church leaders said, pledging continued cooperation.
