NRM steps up mobilisation in Karamoja ahead of local council elections

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has stepped up grassroots mobilisation in Karamoja ahead of the nationwide Village Women Committee and LC1 elections, scheduled for July 23 and 28, 2026, respectively.

On Sunday, the party’s regional secretariat convened district leaders at Yellow Stone Hotel in Moroto District for a strategic meeting aimed at briefing, orienting, and building capacity to coordinate subcounty and village barazas across the subregion.

According to the Electoral Commission roadmap, Village Women Committee elections will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, while Local Council I (LC1) Chairpersons elections are set for Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

The meeting brought together senior NRM and government leaders from across Karamoja, including Loki John Baptist, Matheniko County MP and NRM Vice Chairperson Karamoja, NRM District Chairpersons, LCV Chairpersons flag bearers, Constituency MPs and Woman MPs, NRM Municipality Chairpersons, NRM District Registrars and Administrators, as well as the security team comprising RDCs, DISOs, and RPCs.

Discussions centered on voter mobilisation strategies, community engagement through barazas, message discipline, unity, and ensuring high voter turnout for NRM candidates.

John Logwe, the Moroto District NRM Chairperson, urged NRM cadres to support grassroots mobilisation, sensitise, and ensure communities turn up in large numbers to vote for party flag bearers.

He said strong village-level structures would be key to delivering victory in the upcoming polls.

Logwe tasked subcounty NRM chairpersons and LC1 chairpersons to call for meetings in their villages to prepare voters for elections.

Leaders emphasised that Village Women Committees and LC1s remain critical structures for service delivery and security.

The Moroto engagement forms part of a nationwide series of mobilisation meetings being undertaken by the NRM Secretariat to strengthen grassroots coordination and enhance preparation ahead of the country’s local council and women’s council election before Ugandans head to the polls later this month.
