The Katakwi District Teachers Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO) has approved a budget of Shs 35 million for the 2026/2027 financial year.
Chairperson Samuel Ogweret announced that this budget will be funded through membership savings, subscriptions, and support from various partners and stakeholders.
Ogweret detailed that the allocated funds will be utilized to acquire land for a SACCO teachers’ house, purchase essential equipment such as computers and motorcycles, and cover operational costs as well as development initiatives for the SACCO.
This announcement was made during the ninth Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the district headquarters on Saturday, April 28, 2026.
Established a decade ago, the SACCO currently boasts 396 registered members out of a total of 2,052 teachers in the district’s educational institutions.
Ogweret urged more teachers to join the SACCO, emphasizing that collective efforts can lead to meaningful growth and development.
He encouraged existing members to prioritize savings, which would help realize a revolving fund and meet their annual subscription.
Additionally, Ogweret expressed gratitude toward stakeholders, particularly the Vice President and Katakwi District Woman MP, Jessica Alupo, for her recent generous support of Shs 50 million to the SACCO.
Harriet Faith Akwii, the principal assistant secretary and deputy CAO of Katakwi, encouraged teachers to focus on their SACCOs rather than commercial banks, assuring them of better advantages.
She noted that under the Walimu Cooperative Union, Shs 500 million was allocated to each district for the support of teacher SACCOs.
