The Katakwi District Teachers Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (SACCO) has approved a budget of Shs 35 million for the 2026/2027 financial year.
Chairperson Samuel Ogweret announced that the budget will be funded through members’ savings, subscriptions, and support from various partners and stakeholders.
Ogweret explained that the allocated funds will be used to acquire land for a SACCO teachers’ house, purchase essential equipment such as computers and motorcycles, and cover operational costs as well as development initiatives for the SACCO.
The announcement was made during the ninth Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the district headquarters on Saturday, 28 April 2026.
Established a decade ago, the SACCO currently has 396 registered members out of a total of 2,052 teachers in the district’s educational institutions.
Ogweret urged more teachers to join the SACCO, emphasising that collective effort can lead to meaningful growth and development.
He encouraged existing members to prioritise savings, which would help establish a revolving fund and meet their annual subscription obligations.
Additionally, Ogweret expressed gratitude to stakeholders, particularly the Vice President and Katakwi District Woman MP, Jessica Alupo, for her recent donation of Shs 50 million to the SACCO.
Harriet Faith Akwii, the Principal Assistant Secretary and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Katakwi, encouraged teachers to focus on their SACCOs rather than commercial banks, assuring them of better benefits.
She noted that under the Walimu Cooperative Union, Shs 500 million was allocated to each district to support teacher SACCOs.
