Kotido registers decline in malaria prevalence rate

Malaria vaccine and sleeping under long-lasting treated mosquito net have proven to help avert the severity of the disease responsible for fatalities among the children aged between 3 months and five years and expectant mothers in Kotido district.

According to Dr. Paul Lokut the Kotido general hospital health educator attributed the reductions in malaria prevalence to a combination of core vector control and preventative measures being implemented by the district.

Despite the reduction in numbers, Dr. Lokut highlighted the need for a concerted effort towards the fight against malaria.

He urged the community to intensify on implementation of the preventive measures to combat surge in malaria positive cases during the current rainy season.

Currently selected districts in Karamoja sub-region are ongoing a three months targeted administration of preventative antimalarial to children aged 3 to 59 months during peak rainy and transmission seasons to offer them extra protection against malaria.

The program is being implemented by ministry of health and malaria consortium in conjunction with the local governments of Kaabong, Kotido, Karenga and Abim districts whereby children aged three months to 5years are given antimalarial boosters dozes.

Meanwhile, Dickens Lokote the clinical officer serving at Rengen Health Centre III in Kotido district intimated to the public the importance of treatment adherence in malaria case management.

He says that the second dose in malaria treatment is a game changer which all patients should observe because once taken within the stipulated 8hours, the malaria will clear completely.

He observed that government has put in place new guidelines on malaria case management and new treatment drugs have been introduced to up the fight against malaria.
