Atik Division Council approves plan to expand Arocha Auction Market

Atik Division Council has approved a plan to expand Arocha Auction Market to accommodate livestock trading, in a move aimed at improving the facility and increasing local revenue for the division.

The resolution was reached during the first council meeting of Atik Division, held on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, at the Atik Division Council Hall.

Presenting the Executive Committee report, the Division Vice-Chairperson and Leader of Government Business, Lillian Apio, said the executive had identified four key areas requiring urgent attention to promote development in the division.

One of the concerns was the poor state of Arocha Market, where traders and residents reportedly operate in challenging conditions, with redundant lock-ups contributing to insecurity within the market.

Consequently, the council resolved to give owners of the lock-ups a three-month ultimatum to complete construction works. Those who fail to comply could have their plots auctioned or allocated to potential developers willing to put the spaces to productive use.

The council also proposed installing CCTV cameras at Arocha Market as part of future efforts to strengthen security. The surveillance system would help monitor areas affected by theft, robbery and other forms of criminal activity and assist authorities in identifying suspects.

Meanwhile, the council appointed Tonny Onaa from Olili Ward as Chairperson of the Land Committee.

Four members were also appointed to the committee: Odongo Moses of Industrial Ward, Walikira Hassan of Bung Ward, Joan Olung of Bung Ward and Ogwal Deno of Bardek Ward.

Okunyu Nelson was appointed Chairperson of the Finance and Planning Committee, while Morish Opio will chair the Production, Marketing, Community-Based Services, Health and Education Committee.

Closing the meeting, Atik Division LC3 Chairperson James Owiny urged councillors to lead by example and ensure that government programmes are implemented in accordance with the law.

Senior Town Clerk Tonny Edyel welcomed the council’s resolutions, saying they would contribute to the development of Atik Division.

Edyel also urged councillors to support efforts to recover outstanding local revenue from taxpayers. He called on residents to fulfil their tax obligations, saying local leaders should lead by example in meeting their responsibilities.
