Maruzi North MP calls for targeted youth development interventions

Maruzi North County Member of Parliament in Apac District, Hon. Bernard Otim Odoc, has called for targeted interventions to support young people, saying youth challenges should be addressed through practical solutions rather than constant condemnation.

Otim made the remarks recently while addressing young people in Ongica Parish, Chegere Sub-county, in Apac District.

The legislator urged leaders, communities and other stakeholders to avoid generalising young people or associating them with social problems such as theft, prostitution, drug abuse and alcoholism.

He instead called for increased investment in youth development initiatives that can equip young people with skills, capital and opportunities to earn sustainable livelihoods.

Otim encouraged young people to use their time and available resources productively by engaging in activities such as agriculture, small businesses, vocational skills, technology and other income-generating ventures.

He said access to practical skills and economic opportunities can help young people become more self-reliant while reducing vulnerability to social challenges associated with unemployment and idleness.

The legislator also challenged leaders to establish additional community-based projects that complement government programmes aimed at supporting young people.

He urged young people to form and join organised groups, saying collective action can make it easier for them to access government programmes, training, financial support, markets and other development opportunities.

According to Otim, youth groups can also help members pool resources, share knowledge and develop joint enterprises that may be difficult to establish individually.

He further called on stakeholders to strengthen mentorship and skills-development programmes so that young people can acquire both technical and entrepreneurial skills needed to compete in the changing job market.

The MP said youth development should not focus only on providing financial assistance but should also include training in financial literacy, business management, leadership, innovation and the responsible use of resources.

He encouraged parents, cultural leaders, schools, religious institutions and local governments to play a role in guiding young people and creating an environment where they can develop their potential.

Otim said empowering young people through practical and targeted interventions would enable them to become productive members of their communities and contribute to local economic development.

He urged young people in Ongica Parish and the wider Maruzi North area to take advantage of available opportunities, work together and remain committed to activities that can improve their livelihoods and secure their future.
