Youth urged to embrace technology without losing cultural identity

Young Ugandans have been urged to embrace technological advancement and innovation while preserving the cultural values and traditions that define their identity.

Minister of ICT and National Guidance Justine Kasule Lumumba made the call on Thursday while opening the 10th National Conference on Communication at Makerere University in Kampala.

Lumumba said rapid technological development and changing lifestyles were increasingly influencing young people, with some abandoning cultural beliefs and traditions that shaped their upbringing.

She encouraged the youth to use technology as a tool for development without losing respect for their cultural heritage.

The Minister said government continues to invest in technology and innovation, with funding provided annually to support technological development.

Meanwhile, Kiira Motors Corporation Chief Executive Officer Paul Isaac Musasizi urged young innovators to work together and transform their ideas and talents into practical solutions to challenges facing Ugandans.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe said the university was strengthening practical learning by involving students in technology projects.

“We are increasingly putting classroom knowledge into practical use. Our students are being involved in projects such as the development of electric vehicles, giving them an opportunity to apply what they learn and develop practical solutions,” Professor Nawangwe said.

Students from Maruzi Seed Secondary School and St Albert Technical School in Apac District are participating in the two-day innovation activities organised in collaboration with NURIN.

The conference brings together stakeholders in communication, technology and innovation under the theme “Accelerating Market-Driven Research and Innovation for Uganda’s Development.”
