Police in Oyam has arrested a man accused of impersonating police.
Engola Gerald 30, allegedly duped a police officer at Oyam Central Police Station with claims that he is a police officer who had been transferred from Abim district and was consequently deployed by police of Oyam under the leadership of former District Police Commander (DPC), SP Edison Muhangi as a Criminal Investigative Officer.
Under the guise of a Criminal Investigation Officer, Engola reportedly stole 15 motorcycles and a car, which are now held at Loro police station.
It is reported that on Wednesday, Engola convinced a boda-boda rider to transport him to Otwal subcounty, Oyam district but on the way, he hit the unidentified boda-boda rider with iron bars with the aim of robbing his motorcycle.
The boda-boda rider made an alarm that attracted locals who arrested Engola.
Oyam DPC Job Mutegeki confirmed Engola’s arrest and accused police of incompetence in screening the latter to ascertain if indeed he was a police officer.
Mutegeki said Engola was charged with theft, robbery and impersonation.
Mwaka Isa, a local of Otwal Sub County also accused Engola of stealing his bicycle in June.
