Lamwo names and shames leaders with no latrines

Celebrating World Water Day and Sanitation Week 2023 In Lamwo District under the Themes “Accelerating Change”

Lamwo district on Wednesday used celebrations to mark the World Water Day to name and shame local leaders who do not have sanitation and hygiene facilities in their homes as a means to compel others to act. Since this year’s celebrations were hosted by Palabek Nyimur sub county, the naming was zeroed to the sub county.

The names of leaders whose homes do not have pit latrines are Mr. Apire Simon, the Vice Chairperson of Padwat Central village in Nyimur Sub County and the Sub County Community Development Officer, according to the Lamwo District Health Inspector, Mr. Wilson Arop.

Mr. Arop explained that the name and shame strategy was adopted to improve latrine coverage in the sub county. Currently, latrine and hand washing facilities coverage in Palabek Nyimur Sub County stands at 61% and 18% respectively. Overall, Lamwo district latrine and handwashing facilities coverage stands at 66% and 41% respectively.

Ms. Grace Acayo, the Lamwo District Water Officer revealed that they will award three households with the best hygiene practices with a goat each to motivate others and urged communities to avoid open defecation.

Palabek Nyimur Sub County Councilor who doubles as the Lamwo District Speaker, Hon. Ochola James urged local leaders to sensitize the masses about the benefits of having latrines in their homes.
