Lamwo district leaders demand By-Law against beating women

Communities and local leaders in Lamwo District have demanded the district Council to formulate and implement an ordinance against men who beat their wives as a tool of mitigating Violence Against Women.

The calls were made on Friday during Women’s Day celebration held in Dii-cwinyi Primary School in Lamwo Town Council.

Mr. Nyeko Johnson Koret an entrepreneur, engineer and a former Lamwo County MP contestant noted that battering women comes with both physical and psychological pain that limits women’s contribution in development activities. He reasons that the ordinance, if formulated, should come with fines and other forms of punishment for those who will be found beating their wives. This he says will ensure women’s safety in the district.

He says Sub Counties should ratify the law and ensure its implementation so that cases of Gender Based Violence are reduced in Lamwo district.

Hon Acora Nancy Odonga, the Lamwo District Woman Member of Parliament supported the idea of a local law but was quick to note that women should respect their husbands and understand that they are successful because their men are behind them.
