Women making a difference through groups savings

A group of 100 women in the four districts of East Acholi (i.e. Kitgum, Pader, Agago and Lamwo) are making a difference through village savings and loans association.

Lurem Women’s Group that started in 2018 with just 36 members now boasts of up to 100 members with a savings balance of shs35 million.

During celebrations to mark their 5th anniversary on Friday 28th April 2023, at Lajok Ogayo Primary School in Omiya Anyima Sub County, Kitgum district, Ms. Laker Idha, the of Chairperson Lurem Women Groups that they value peaceful and economically empowered homes for their members.

She added that they always make sure their members are respectful to their husbands and families for peace to prevail in their homes. Ms. Laker revealed that they intend to invest in events management but their funds are insufficient.

The Omiya Anyima Sub-County Female Councilor V, Hon Joyce Alwoch said women noted that if women come together to empower themselves, it helps reduce Gender based violence in communities.

Hon Lamwaka Mangret Odwar, the Chua East Member of parliament said the initiative by the women coming together in groups is a sign of progress and a strong commitment to eradicate poverty in households.

She calls upon women to be honest and respectful to their husbands if they are to reduce Gender based violence in their homes.
