Police concerned with social media misuse

The Police in Aswa East Region have expressed concern about persistent misuse of social and mainstream media by a section of the public to incite others.

While addressing the press from his office at the Aswa East Regional Police Headquarters in Kitgum town on Thursday, ACP Anatoli Katungwensi, the Regional Police Commander noted that propagandists have made it a habit to spread hate speech on social media; something he says incites the public and is a threat to national security.

He cited a social media user who has been spreading information that the milk supplied by the Balaalo contains poison and telling people to shun milk supplied by the Balaalo and their restaurants. He warned that such incitement is illegal and those propagandists will be charged accordingly.

ACP Katungwensi also used the same press briefing to congratulate the Kitgum District Woman Member of Parliament for her appointment as the Minister of State for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees and the reappointment of other ministers from the region.

He thanked the appointing authority for appointing the ministers and asked them to use their powers to develop the region and the entire country.

He also pledged to work together with the ministers for the development of the region.
