STRAKON Construction Company Limited, the contractor of contracted to construct Lanyadyeng Bridge in Labongo Amida West Sub-County, Kitgum district has been directed to desist from transporting workers to sleep away from the site.
It has been established that the company workers commute from Kitgum town every day to go and work at the site, about 18 kilometers away. Some workers reasoned that the site has poor network connectivity yet they have to be in touch with their beloved ones.
Mr. Athony Namara, the Commissioner Local Economic Development in the Ministry of Local Government said transporting workers to and from Kitgum is delaying the completion of Lanyadyang bridge which is already long overdue. He directed the contractor to keep workers at the site with the immediate effect or have his contract terminated and face jail for costing the government time and resources.
He made the remarks on Wednesday 24th Jan 2024 during the site visit.
A total of Shs1.4b has been allocated for the project with funding from USAID. The contract period ends in April 2024 but the contractor has requested for two more months; a request commissioner Namara denied.
Mr. John Ogwang, the site Engineer pledged to put in more efforts so that the works reach 70% by February 7th, 2024 when another site meeting will be held with the district officials.
