Over 5,000 Christians to bid farewell to Archbishop Kaziimba

More than 5,000 Christians are expected in Kitgum District on September 26, 2026, to welcome and bid farewell to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, as he concludes his eight-year tenure.

Archbishop Kaziimba is expected to arrive in Kitgum on September 25, ahead of a farewell procession the following day, before proceeding to the Bishop’s House in Gulu.

Dr Gladys Oyat, vice-chairperson of the organising committee, said 40 parishes under the Diocese of Kitgum will participate and called on Christians and members of the public to attend in large numbers.

The Diocesan Secretary, Willy Olango, said the organising committee had set a budget of Shs100 million and was appealing for contributions from parishes, schools, health facilities and other institutions.

Bishop Wilson Kitara of Kitgum Diocese said Archbishop Kaziimba had faithfully served the Church and inspired Christians during his time in office. He cited the Archbishop’s consistent participation in the annual St Janani Luwum Day celebrations at Wii-Gweng in Mucwini.

Bishop Kitara said Archbishop Kaziimba will also officially declare the Golden Jubilee celebrations of St Janani Luwum, scheduled for next year.

In a lighter moment, Dr Oyat revealed that the Archbishop is an Arsenal supporter, with local Arsenal fans planning a special dinner for him during his visit.
