More than 5,000 Christians are expected in Kitgum District on September 26, 2026, to welcome and bid farewell to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, as he concludes his 8-year tenure.
Archbishop Kaziimba is expected to arrive in Kitgum on September 25, ahead of the farewell procession the following day, before proceeding to the Bishop’s House in Gulu.
Dr Gladys Oyat, Vice Chairperson of the organising committee, says 40 parishes under the Diocese of Kitgum will participate and has called on Christians and the public to attend in large numbers.
Diocesan Secretary, Willy Olango says the organising committee has set a 100-million-shilling budget and is appealing for contributions from parishes, schools, health facilities and other institutions.
Bishop Wilson Kitara of Kitgum Diocese says Archbishop Kaziimba has faithfully served the Church and inspired Christians during his time in office, including consistently presiding over the annual St Janani Luwum Day celebrations at Wii-Gweng in Mucwini.
Bishop Kitara says Archbishop Kaziimba will also officially declare the Golden Jubilee celebrations of St Janani Luwum, scheduled for next year.
And in a lighter moment, Dr Oyat revealed that the Archbishop is an Arsenal supporter, with local Arsenal fans planning a special dinner for him during his visit.
