Farmers in Lagoro Sub-county, Kitgum District, have been urged to adopt climate-smart agricultural practices and protect the environment as efforts intensify to address the growing impact of climate change on household livelihoods.
The call was made during a radio talk show on 103.5 Tembo FM in Kitgum on Wednesday, organised as part of community sensitisation efforts involving the Gen Lubanga Farmers’ Group, the Community Development Officer (CDO) of Lagoro Sub-county and ADRA Uganda under the Together Project.
Speaking during the programme, Gen Lubanga Farmers’ Group chairperson, Mr Olanya Sisto, said climate change had increased the vulnerability of rural communities, contributing to rising poverty as farming households struggled to sustain their livelihoods.
He said some community members had resorted to cutting down trees for timber and charcoal production to earn money to meet their basic needs, including buying food, a practice he warned could further degrade the environment.
Mr Olanya called on farmers to embrace sustainable agricultural practices, including planting trees, selecting quality seeds, adopting appropriate farming technologies and making efficient use of limited rainfall.
He also encouraged farmers to spray crops at the appropriate time, avoid bush burning and rear livestock as an alternative source of income to strengthen household resilience against climate-related challenges.
The Lagoro Sub-county Community Development Officer, Mr Oryem Ronald Willy, emphasised the need for farmers to protect water sources, practise proper land management and adjust planting and harvesting schedules in response to changing rainfall patterns.
He said access to weather forecasts and agricultural advisory services was essential in helping farmers make informed decisions and minimise losses associated with unpredictable weather conditions.
Mr Oryem further urged communities to conserve water sources for both domestic consumption and livestock, noting that environmental protection should be a priority in efforts to address the effects of climate change.
The engagement highlights the importance of collaboration between local leaders, development partners and farmers in promoting environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture and community resilience to climate change.
Through such sensitisation initiatives, stakeholders hope to encourage communities to adopt practices that protect natural resources while improving food security and household incomes.
