Two houses reduced to ashes, 13 arrested in Kitgum land wrangle

Two huts and property worth millions of shillings were reduced to ashes on Tuesday in Nyapeya B village, Pugoda west parish, Namokora sub-county, Kitgum district, following an alleged land dispute.
According to district security officials, 13 people have so far been arrested to assist with investigations into the incident, which also destroyed four sacks of sim-sim and a motorcycle belonging to Mr Otoo Aldo, a resident of the village. Additionally, four goats are reported missing following the clash.
The disputed land is estimated to be between 30 and 40 acres. The parties involved in the conflict are Mr Otoo Aldo, Mr Obwona Raymond, and Mr Ochola John. It is alleged that Mr Omony Michael and the LC1 Chairperson of Nyapeya B village are claiming ownership of the communal land.
Haji Waliri Marijan, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Kitgum district, stated that police officers are handling the situation and condemned the barbaric act of taking the law into one’s own hands. He confirmed that the 13 suspects would be transferred to Kitgum Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Walire revealed that the land dispute is still before the court, with a hearing scheduled for Thursday, 21st November 2024, at the Kitgum Chief Magistrate’s Court.
ASP Peter Owesigye, the Kitgum District Police Commander, disclosed that both parties involved had filed assault cases at Kitgum CPS. He further noted that one person sustained injuries during the fracas and was admitted to Namokora HCIV for treatment.
