The High Court in Kitgum, through the Principal Judge and the Spotlight Initiative, has launched a video conference system for Kitgum and Lamwo districts.

The launch was presided over by Hon. Justice Mwaka Philip Wilbrod on behalf of the Principal Judge of Uganda, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, together with representatives from UNDP and the Kingdom of the Netherlands under Spotlight Initiative 2.0 through the UNDP funding window.

Ms. Nwanne Vwede-Obahor, the UNDP representative, said courtrooms are no longer a preserve of urban centres or capital cities, adding that digitalization has become an essential enabler of timely, efficient, and non-discriminatory justice delivery in an era where technology is transforming every sector.

She added that the video conference system will support faster and more efficient case management and dispute resolution, improve working conditions in courts, and enhance access to justice, particularly for children, women, and girls.

Mr. Bouwe-Jan Smeding, the Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, said the video conference system will promote justice for all people, help fight Gender-Based Violence (GBV) against women and girls, and support timely justice delivery in courts.

Mr. Geoffrey Oguti, the Assistant RDC of Kitgum, thanked the Judiciary of Uganda and the High Court for upgrading the court system through digitalization. He said the system will reduce the cost of transporting inmates to court daily, minimize delays caused by inmate transportation, and provide an opportunity for more people to follow court proceedings easily.
