Border communities in Madi Opei sub-county in Lamwo district and their counterparts in Tseretenya, Ikotos county, South Sudan, have pledged to live harmoniously to promote trade and other economic activities, fostering development in both communities.

At a meeting held at the Apiriti border point in Madi Opei sub-county, organised by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) under the Cross-Border Opportunities for Migration, Peace, and Sustenance (COMPASS) project, delegates from both sides of the border came together to discuss and identify key challenges and opportunities for peaceful coexistence.

The Ugandan delegation was led by Lamwo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr William Komakech, while the Ikotos County Commissioner, Mr Timon Loboi, led the South Sudanese delegation.

The delegates identified key causes of cross-border conflict, including cattle raids, circulation and consumption of a potent local alcohol known as ‘Guu’, unclear border demarcations, and the proliferation of firearms.

To encourage peaceful coexistence and enhance trade, the two communities—who share close ties—proposed the promotion of the Apiriti border market and another market in Tseretenya, the allocation of more resources from civil society organisations towards mindset change, ongoing engagement between the two communities, the identification and prosecution of perpetrators, and a total ban on the trade of ‘Guu.’

Mr William Komakech, the Lamwo RDC, urged the two communities to leave the past behind and open a new chapter of peaceful cooperation, trade, and prosperity. He emphasised the importance of building an environment where everyone can interact without fear and warned that those involved in cattle raids risk being killed or prosecuted under Ugandan law.
