More than 80 members of criminal gangs arrested in Kitgum

More than 80 youths believed to be members of criminal gangs, commonly known as “Aguu” have been arrested in Kitgum municipality in the last four months.

According to Mr. Ebil Jimmy Ssegawa, the Kitgum Resident District Commissioner, 22 gang members are being processed for prosecution in court. The law will take its course if found guilty of belonging to a criminal gang. He added that the other 60 were found loitering at night and were not members of any criminal gang.

Mr. Ebil revealed that they are in talks with the 5th Infantry Division Commander in Achol-pii to deploy soldiers who will work with the police to maintain sanity during this festive season.

Following reports of suspicious persons moving around to behead people, Mr. Ebil also said no such case has been reported in Kitgum district and called for vigilant and close cooperation between all stakeholders.

He asked local leaders to convene community meetings with their electorates to deliberate on the security and safety of locals.
