The Assistant Commissioner in Charge Primary Education in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Mr. Robert Ikwap, has called for increased commitment from the teachers during school hours.
Mr. Ikwap made this appeal during an engagement meeting with the headteachers in Kitgum district on Monday. The meeting, organised by Plan International, aimed to review the challenges hindering learner performance in the various schools in the district.
During the meeting, teachers highlighted several challenges, including inconsistent learner attendance, especially in the second and third terms, teachers transfer, human-wildlife conflict, salary review issues, defilement of learners, the need for coding of more primary schools, and land conflicts among others.
Mr. Ikwap urged schools not to send learners home for defaulting on fees but rather to put pressure on parents to commit to paying school fees.
The Kitgum Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Ebil Jimmy Ssegawa, urged school heads to convene meetings with school management committees, LCI and LCII Chairpersons, and other local leaders to find lasting solutions to land disputes between communities and schools.
He also appealed to the local leaders to ban children from attending funeral dances, adding that the practice contributes to poor performance and school dropout in the district.
