Kitgum District Local Government is planning to allocate resources to the water department in a bid to address the water shortage in some sub-counties within the district.

While delivering the State of the District address during the recent council meeting, Kitgum District Chairperson Mr. Arwai Christopher Obol stated that the district plans to drill a borehole in each village.

He added that the district also aims to extend piped water to rural areas that lack boreholes. He revealed that they intend to contract service providers to manage water sources and ensure proper maintenance.

He also appealed to sub-county authorities to make use of the available structures to maintain the existing water sources.

Mr. Arwai revealed that water coverage in rural areas stands at 95%, while the functionality of rural water sources is at 66%, which is lower than the district’s projection.

Hon. Aber Shara, Female Councillor IV for Labongo Amida and Labongo Amida West sub-counties, urged the district to engage development partners in order to expand their scope of work, ensuring that sub-counties facing water scarcity receive reliable water sources.
