Up to 25 solar street lights in Kitgum municipality are not functioning, according to the municipal engineer, Mr. Alfred Bongomin Alexis.
While speaking to journalists during a press briefing on Tuesday, Eng. Bongomin revealed that of the 25 damaged street lights, the municipality is only able to repair 10 due to the high cost of maintenance.
He said the cost of each solar battery is about Shs1.5 million, meaning that between Shs180 and Shs640 million is required to repair all the 25 damaged solar powered street lights.
He however promised to present a budget to the town clerk so that part of the Uganda Road Fund money is allocated to repair the street lights.
Eng. Bongomin attributed the breakdown of the street lights to vandalism by a section of antidevelopment elements in society.
He also appealed to the support team and other responsible persons to take charge and care of the solar lights since they are crucial for maintaining calm at night.
