Top Kitgum officials arrested for alleged extortion in PDM scheme

Three top officials, including the subcounty Chairperson of Labongo Akwang subcounty in Kitgum district, have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from potentail beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model (PDM) program.
The arrested officials are Mr. Lubangakene Mark, the subcounty Chairperson, Lutwa Robert, the Chairperson of Pajimo Parish SACCO, and Odiya Kenneth, the Secretary of Pajimo Parish SACCO. They were taken into custody following numerous complaints from affected beneficiaries.
According to Hajj Marijan Walire, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, the arrests were made after thorough investigation.
The officials allegedly demanded amounts ranging from UGX 8,000 to UGX 20,000 from beneficiaries, claiming the fees were for stationery, internet, and laptops, totaling over UGX 3 million.
Walire stated that the arrests of the officials should deter others who may be involved in similar corrupt activities. He urged the community to remain vigilant as investigations continue.
Kitgum District Police Commander Peter Oyesigye confirmed the arrests, adding that the suspects are currently detained at Kitgum Central Police Station. He assured that the police are committed to ensuring justice is served and that those found guilty will be held accountable.
