Police in Aswa East have confirmed a fatal road crash that occurred on the night of April 16th, 2026, at Aswa Bridge along the Gulu–Kitgum highway.
The accident involved a Mercedes-Benz trailer, registration number UAR 557R/UAS 431A, which was transporting groundnuts from South Sudan to Kampala.
According to police reports, the driver, Omar Wasime, lost control of the vehicle after developing a mechanical problem, suspected to be brake failure, as he approached a UPDF checkpoint at high speed. The truck knocked down a signpost, crashed into roadside barriers, veered off the bridge, and overturned into River Aswa.
One person, identified as Rasul Musema Safi, the turnman, died on the spot. The driver survived with serious injuries and was rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Security personnel, including police and UPDF, responded to the scene with the help of the local community to rescue the injured and retrieve the body of the deceased.
The vehicle remains submerged in the river and is under guard as arrangements for recovery continue.
Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
