The Coordination Office for the Prevention of Human Trafficking, under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, has urged holidaymakers to be vigilant about human trafficking as they return home for the long holiday.
ASP Rukuna Memory made the call on Monday, December 2, 2024, while sensitising students from YY Okot Memorial School and Kitgum High School.
The sensitisation program is funded by UNDP under the Spotlight Initiative.
ASP Rukuna also revealed that, as part of efforts to combat human trafficking, the Ministry of Internal Affairs plans to organise a debating competition next year among schools in selected districts to raise awareness.
The competition will include schools from eight districts, such as Omoro, Kitgum, Yumbe, Amudat, Kyegegwa, and Terego, with each district sending two schools to participate.
Rukuna further emphasised that traffickers often target students by luring them with promises of sponsorships and jobs, exploiting their vulnerability and ultimately trapping them.
