The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) in Kitgum is set to drill two new production wells to provide alternative water sources and ensure clean, potable water for its customers.

Ms Caro Mercy Abonyo, the NWSC Kitgum Area Manager, stated that work on one production well has already been completed, with additional wells expected to be operational before the end of the 2024/2025 financial year. This initiative aims to address the growing demand for water within the municipality.

She added that the new wells will complement the existing production system at Kitgum Hill Top, where six functional boreholes are already in place.

The new production wells, currently under development, will have a capacity to produce 20 cubic litres of water per hour, which will help alleviate the water shortages currently affecting certain areas within Kitgum Municipality.

The drilling project is estimated to cost UGX 100 million. However, Abonyo revealed that funds have been exhausted, causing a delay in the work. Despite this, she expressed optimism that the wells will be completed by the end of the 2024/2025 financial year.

In addition, NWSC Kitgum is in the process of upgrading the transformer at Lemo One to improve the reliability of the water supply. This upgrade is part of NWSC’s broader goal of ensuring clean and safe water for all its customers.

Abonyo urged the public to promptly report issues such as meter theft, water leakages, and areas without water, so that NWSC can respond quickly.

She also appealed to customers to pay their water bills on time to avoid disconnection and disruptions to NWSC operations.
