The Kitgum District Chairperson, Mr. Arwai Christopher Obol, has issued a stern warning to residents to desist from bush burning during this dry season, emphasising that the practice is causing damage to crops and grasses vital for construction.
Bush burning, a practice traditionally rooted in local customs, is common during the dry season with the intent of promoting the growth of new pastures after the first rains and clearing land for agriculture. Others use it as a hunting method for wild animals.
Speaking on Tembo FM on Tuesday morning, Mr. Arwai called for an end to the practice, highlighting its adverse effects on the environment. He noted that bush burning was traditionally practiced with specific purposes in mind, unlike today, where individuals often set fires without valid reasons or consideration for the consequences.
The Kitgum district leader also cautioned residents against allowing their animals to roam freely, as they risk being stolen or contracting diseases. He further pointed out that stray animals are a leading cause of road accidents.
