The leadership of Kitgum Owino Market Vendors Association have been ordered by the district leaders to register all vehicles that transport vendors to the different markets that they travel to with immediate effect
The directive was issued by the leadership of Kitgum district and Kitgum municipality during a meeting with the vendors and transporters on Sunday at Christ the King Social Center.
Mr Toolit Godfrey, the Urban Chairperson Three Central Division, Kitgum municipality reasoned that registration of the vehicles transporting vendors to auctions will get rid of reckless driving and poorly serviced vehicles on the roads, thus reducing cases of accidents.
He also noted that some vehicles are operating without the consent of the Owino leaders, making it risky for the vendors.
Mr. Ebil Jimmy Ssegawa, the Kitgum Resident District Commissioner said registration of the number of vehicles operating on the various routes will help the security team to monitor whether the person driving a particular vehicle is qualified to be on the road.
He appeals to the association to work hand in hand with the security team so that they can reduce the rate of accidents in the district.
He also calls upon the association to have a by- law in place that governs loading, number of passengers, and time of traveling among others
