The Kitgum Taxi Owners and Drivers Cooperative Society Limited (KITODCSL) has elected new leaders to oversee the operations and management of the Kitgum Bus Park.
The elections, held on Wednesday, September 6, 2026, saw Mr. Odong Peter, the incumbent chairperson, retain his position after securing 123 votes out of 183 registered voters. A total of 149 members cast their votes, while 34 did not participate in the election. Mr. Ottocon Richard came second with 26 votes.
Mr. Odokonyero was also re-elected as treasurer after serving four terms. He secured 112 votes, while Okema Justine came second with 39 votes.
Other positions filled during the election included the vice chairperson, vetting committee, supervision committee and six committee members.
However, the election was briefly disrupted when some individuals reportedly attempted to stop the exercise, claiming that their names were not on the voters’ register. The individuals were subsequently arrested and taken to the Central Police Station (CPS) for questioning.
Speaking after the election, Mr. Opoka Charles Darwin, the Kitgum Municipal Commercial Officer, commended the management of KITODCSL for conducting a peaceful election.
He called on the newly elected leaders to undergo training in cooperative management so that they can effectively manage the society and address the needs of its members.
Opoka also urged the outgoing leaders to prepare a comprehensive report on the activities and affairs of the society to be presented during the handover and swearing-in ceremony of the new leadership.
He further appealed to district leaders to support KITODCSL by linking it with other districts to create more opportunities and improve the society’s operations.
Meanwhile, Mr. Labaklpiny Stephen Oketa, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kitgum, called upon the newly elected leaders to maintain discipline and lead the society with respect.
He reminded the leaders that their responsibility extends beyond the people working at the bus park, saying KITODCSL serves a wider community and contributes to the interests of Ugandans.
The new leadership is expected to begin its term with a focus on improving the management of the bus park, strengthening the cooperative and promoting the welfare of taxi owners and drivers.
