The Local Organizing Committee for the 48th commemoration of St. Janani Luwum Day at Wii-Gweng in Mucwini Sub-County, Kitgum district, is looking for Ushs98m to fund its budget.
St. Janani Luwum Day is a public holiday, celebrated annually on 16th February. The holiday is dedicated to the life and service of Janani Luwum, the former archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda, who was murdered on the orders of then-President Idi Amin.
Canon Gladys Oyat, the Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee revealed on Tuesday during a press briefing that the preparations are at 60% with 100 intercessors expected.
She noted that foot pilgrims will start their journey on February 11th from Gulu city and sleep in Cwero. They will proceed to Angagura on February 12th and Lacekocot on the 13th of February. They will reach Kitgum on the 15th of February 2025 before heading to Wii Gweng in Mucwini
To make this year’s celebration unique, Oyat revealed that they have organized a football tournament whose final will be played on the 15th of February 2025 and the winning team to be awarded a trophy.
She appeals to all the Christians and well-wishers to support the day financially or in kind so that the day is marked successfully.
Rt. Rev. Wilson Kitara the bishop of Kitgum diocese said the 48th Commemoration will be animated by the diocese of Kitgum and northern Uganda with 20 bishops expected to grace the occasion.
This year’s celebrations will run under the theme; “Imitating God’s Goodness by Doing Good” with President Museveni expected to be the Chief Guest.
