Kitgum Strengthens Accountability of Health Commodities

Kitgum District health officials and local government leaders have been urged to strengthen accountability and monitoring of essential medicines and health supplies.

The call was made during the dissemination of the Ministry of Health’s Last Mile Assurance Guidelines and the National Health Supply Chain Risk Register and Map in Kitgum.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, pharmacist Emiku Joseph from the Department of Pharmaceuticals and Natural Medicines said the guidelines are aimed at identifying supply chain bottlenecks, managing risks and ensuring medicines reach health facilities in the right quantities and are properly managed.

The Assistant Chief Administrative Officer of Kitgum District, Odong Sam, reaffirmed the district’s commitment to working with the Ministry of Health and National Medical Stores to ensure accountability in the management of medicines.

Meanwhile, Kitgum Municipality Mayor Okwera Richard Ojara called on the Ministry of Health to consider upgrading one of the municipality’s Health Centre Threes to Health Centre Four, citing its large catchment population and high outpatient workload.

Okwera said the upgrade would improve access to health services for residents.
