Kitgum strengthens accountability in health commodities management

Kitgum District health officials and local government leaders have been urged to strengthen accountability and monitoring of essential medicines and health supplies.

The call was made during the dissemination of the Ministry of Health’s Last Mile Assurance Guidelines and the National Health Supply Chain Risk Register and Map in Kitgum.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Health, pharmacist Emiku Joseph from the Department of Pharmaceuticals and Natural Medicines said the guidelines are intended to identify supply chain bottlenecks, manage risks and ensure medicines reach health facilities in the right quantities and are properly managed.

The Assistant Chief Administrative Officer of Kitgum District, Odong Sam, reaffirmed the district’s commitment to working with the Ministry of Health and National Medical Stores to strengthen accountability in the management of medicines.

Meanwhile, Kitgum Municipality Mayor Okwera Richard Ojara called on the Ministry of Health to consider upgrading one of the municipality’s Health Centre IIIs to a Health Centre IV, citing its large catchment population and high outpatient workload.

Okwera said the upgrade would improve access to health services for residents.
