The Northern Uganda Youths Empowerment Network (NUYEN), with funding from Global Funds and partners, is set to test 600 children and 400 pregnant women for malaria in Pafer and Central divisions of Kitgum municipality.
Mr. Solomon Nokrach, the Executive Director of NUYEN, stated that the organisation will also focus on providing HIV and TB testing in the project areas. Additionally, they plan to conduct moonlight testing in bars to complement the government’s efforts to improve health service delivery. Mr. Nokrach revealed that NUYEN aims to sensitise the community on malaria prevention and control.
Mr. Nokrach also noted that the project intends to establish modern smart homes designed to prevent mosquito breeding.
Mr. John Bosco Komakech, the Kitgum Vector Control Officer, emphasised that malaria remains a significant threat to Ugandans, with pregnant mothers and children being the most affected groups. He commended NUYEN for collaborating with the government in the fight against malaria. He highlighted that malaria accounts for 40% of cases reported at outpatient departments (OPDs) across the district.
He appealed to malaria patients to complete their doses and make proper use of mosquito nets to help eliminate the disease.
