Two local leaders in Lagampii Village, Omiya Anyima West Sub-county in Kitgum District, narrowly avoided arrest after allegedly collecting money from beneficiaries during the ongoing mosquito net distribution exercise.
The LC1 Chairperson, Ogenga John, and Oyoo Christopher had reportedly asked residents to contribute money to cover boda boda transport costs for moving the nets from the parish headquarters to the village.
However, the leaders later apologized and refunded all the money collected after it emerged that the government had already allocated 10,000 shillings to facilitate the transportation of the nets.
The confusion is said to have arisen after the Health Assistant, Okot Phillips, failed to inform local leaders and Village Health Teams (VHTs) about the available government facilitation.
Okot also apologized for not passing on the information in time, a lapse that led to the misunderstanding and attempted illegal collection of funds.
Authorities have urged community leaders to always verify information before collecting money from the public, especially during government-supported programs.
