The Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) unit at Kitgum Central Police Station is struggling with inadequate facilities to support victims of SGBV, according to the officer in charge of the unit.

Ms. Ayot Beatrice, the officer in charge, stated that they face difficulties in accommodating victims of sexual violence due to lack of essential items such as basins, soap, and other necessary supplies.

The facility is intended to temporarily house victims of SGBV while investigations and referral processes are carried out by the police. However, for many years, the unit has struggled to acquire the required items and facilities.

Ms. Ayot also revealed that the department recorded 13 rape cases between January and June this year. Of these, five cases are already before the courts, while eight remain under investigation.

She appealed to the district authorities and development partners to support the unit to prevent its closure due to failure to meet the required standards.

Kitgum District Senior Probation Officer, Mr. Ogweng Michael, told stakeholders on Friday that the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has already intervened to equip the unit with the necessary facilities for smooth operations. He commended the unit for its efforts in supporting victims of SGBV.
