AKORI APPLAUDS GOVERNMENT FOR EXTENDING DROUGHT RELIEF TO DROUGHT-AFFECTED DISTRICTS

Agago Woman Member of Parliament who double as the State Minister for Northern Uganda, Hon. Beatrice Akello Akori, has commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the government for extending emergency food relief to drought-affected communities beyond the Karamoja Sub-region.

Akori has thanked President Museveni, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Relief and Refugees Hon. Sam Engola, and State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Relief and Refugees Dr. Lillian Aber, for considering vulnerable communities in neighbouring districts despite the intervention initially targeting the severe hunger situation in Karamoja.

The Minister noted that Agago and Kitgum in the Acholi Sub-region, Otuke in Lango, and Katakwi and Kapelebyong in Teso have benefited from the relief intervention, describing the move as a commendable demonstration of government responsiveness to communities facing prolonged drought.

Akori also appreciated local leaders and fellow Members of Parliament for persistently channelling the concerns of affected communities to government, saying their collective advocacy has helped create dialogue and facilitate timely responses to the worsening situation.

In Agago, approximately 29 percent of vulnerable households are receiving or are slated to receive relief assistance from the Office of the Prime Minister. District LCV Chairperson Wilson Otto says the assistance was secured through sustained advocacy and has urged beneficiaries to use the relief sparingly as leaders continue pushing for support for the remaining vulnerable households.

The latest intervention adds to other relief efforts recently extended to communities in Agago, including assistance from the Salvation Army and Kakande Ministries, reflecting growing efforts by government, faith-based organizations and other concerned actors to respond to the district’s worsening food-security situation.

Akori has called upon government and other organizations to continue sending more relief to people in desperate need of assistance, while urging leaders at all levels to maintain unity and work together in advancing the plight of their communities.

She says the collective response remains critical as vulnerable households continue facing the effects of the prolonged drought and food insecurity.
