The Lamwo District LC5 Chairperson, Mr. Oyet Sisto Ocen, has cautioned residents against public gatherings as part of efforts to prevent the spread of Ebola in the district.

Speaking during the launch of the Uganda climate smart agricultural transformation project in Lamwo Town Council, Mr. Ocen urged community members to avoid unnecessary physical contact, including handshakes, and to maintain proper hygiene practices.

He noted that Ebola is transmitted through direct body contact with infected persons and bodily fluids, among other means, and called on residents to strictly observe standard operating procedures (SOPs) aimed at preventing the disease.

Mr. Ocen further appealed to the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspected Ebola cases to health authorities. He emphasized the importance of regular handwashing before and after carrying out daily activities.

Meanwhile, the Lamwo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. William Komakech, said several districts in Uganda are considered high-risk areas for Ebola. In the Acholi Sub-region, he identified Lamwo and Amuru districts as particularly vulnerable due to their proximity to the South Sudan border.

Mr. Komakech explained that early symptoms of Ebola may resemble those of malaria, including fever and excessive sweating, making it difficult for some people to recognize the disease in its initial stages. He therefore urged residents to seek immediate medical attention whenever they experience unusual symptoms.

He assured the public that the government is working tirelessly to contain and eliminate the disease but stressed that community vigilance and cooperation remain crucial in the fight against Ebola.
