Acholi sub-region braces for above-normal rains

Farmers and residents across the Acholi sub-region have been advised to prepare for above-normal rainfall between September and December 2026, according to the seasonal climate outlook issued by the Ministry of Water and Environment through the Department of Meteorological Services.

The forecast covers Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader, Agago, Gulu, Omoro, Amuru and Nwoya districts, as well as Gulu City and Kitgum Municipality.

According to the outlook, the region is currently experiencing intermittent rainfall and dry spells, but more consistent rains are expected to establish by late September.

The eastern Acholi zone, covering Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader, Agago and Kitgum Municipality, is expected to receive its peak rainfall between mid-October and November. A similar pattern is forecast for Gulu, Omoro, Amuru, Nwoya and Gulu City.

The Ministry attributes the expected increase in rainfall partly to an intensifying El Niño episode, while the Indian Ocean Dipole is projected to shift into a positive phase by October, potentially further enhancing rainfall activity.

Meteorological officials are also forecasting warmer-than-average temperatures during the season.

The rainy season is expected to gradually decline and come to an end around late December.

Farmers are being encouraged to take advantage of the expected late-September onset by completing land preparation and planning their agricultural activities, while households and local authorities are advised to prepare for possible localized flooding and other weather-related impacts during the peak rainfall period.
