Education Takes Lion’s Share of Kitgum District’s F/Y 2023/24 Budget

Education has taken the Lion’s Share of Kitgum district’s approved budget for the 2023/24 Financial Year budget as the district sees a decrease of 3.1% in next Financial Year’s Budget.

The District Council on Tuesday approved a budget of Shs35.83 billion for the 2023/2024 financial year; a decrease by 3.1% from the Shs36.98 billion for this ending 2022/23 financial year.

In the budget that will start running on July 1st 2023, education was allocated Ushs13 billion representing 36.68% of the budget, Health and Environment took Ushs10 billion representing 28.55%, Administration was allocated Ushs4 billion (12.51%), Roads and Engineering Ushs2 billion representing 6.93% of the budget among others.

While reading the budget in the District Council Hall, the Kitgum District Vice Chairperson who doubles as the District Secretary for Finance, Planning and Administration, Hon Kevin Joyce Atim revealed that the budget will be financed through Locally Raised Revenues, Discretionary Government Transfers, Conditional Grant Transfer, External Financing and other Government Transfers.

She also disclosed that the district has allocated more funds from Locally Raised Revenues to cater for the welfare of Councilors. The allocation, she says will now see District Councilors earning 200,000 shillings as allowance for each council meeting.

Hon Oketayot Bosco, the Labongo Akwang sub-county councilor called for more sensitization of the populace on the importance of paying taxes so that the district realizes more revenues to finance the budget.
