Government has launched the construction of a sports training facility at Lira University as part of preparations to host the AFCON tournament.
National Council of Sports General Secretary, Patrick Ogwel said all funds for the project have been fully released to the contractor to ensure smooth progress without delays.
Lira City Mayor Sam Atul called on the contractor to complete the work within the agreed timeline and urged government to improve access roads to the facility.
The 13.2 billion shillings project has been awarded to the UPDF Engineering Brigade and is expected to be completed within six months. Construction works started on April 1, 2026.
Ogwel said the facility will help train athletes and provide modern sports infrastructure for Lira University and the Lango sub-region even after AFCON.
Government engineer, Henry Lubega, who spoke on behalf of Minister of Works and transport said similar sports facilities are being constructed at Makerere, Kyambogo, Gulu and Lira universities.
He said the facility will include a standard sports field with a running track, seating area for spectators, wash rooms, parking space, and other essential amenities.
UPDF Engineering Brigade representative Lt. Col. Peter Kidemuka, on behalf of Defense Ministry said the project will be completed on time and will create job opportunities for local residents.
He said many youth from Lango will be employed during the construction, and materials such as sand and stones will be sourced locally to support the community’s income.
National Council of Sports board Chairperson, Ambrose Tashobya said the facility will also support introduction of sports science programs at Lira University.
State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang urged leaders in Lango to support construction of a five-star hotel, saying it is a key requirement by CAF for hosting AFCON matches.
Ogwang who spoke on behalf of Education Minister warned that without adequate accommodation, Lira may miss the chance to host matches despite ongoing stadium and facility developments.
Minister Ogwang noted that although Akiibua is a backup Stadium in hosting AFCON, other games will still be hosted in future for example four nations tournament.
