Cecilia Atim Ogwal Foundation rolls out 50000 fruit trees for Dokolo schools

Dokolo District Local Government has partnered with the Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal Foundation to implement a school greening programme in the district.The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday, 8 May 2026, at the district headquarters.

Dr. Rosemary Alwoc-Ogwal, the Chief Operations Officer of the Foundation, said the initiative aims to restore nature in the district.Alwoc said the late Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal, after observing the destruction of farmland and infrastructure caused by recurring flash floods, began consulting stakeholders on a programme to plant fruit trees as part of environmental education and school greening efforts.

She said the initiative will help improve nutrition for students in schools and also serve as a source of income for public, private, and technical schools.

Isaac Okola, Dokolo District’s Senior Environmental and Conservation Officer, said the district will survey land offered by academic institutions to ensure it is suitable for planting the trees.

The Chief Administrative Officer for Dokolo district, Grandfield Oryono Omonda, welcomed the project on behalf of Dokolo District and signed the MoU. He urged the Foundation to fulfil the tasks outlined in the agreement and engage the Dokolo District Council to ensure the long-term sustainability of the substantial investment.

James Otoo Apili, the outgoing LC V Chairperson, observed that signing the MoU marked the beginning of a partnership that would help the district fight climate change.

Meanwhile, the Acting District Education Officer, Pastor Odung Omara, welcomed the initiative, adding that the district would ensure its proper implementation.

Barbara Akech, the Resident District Commissioner, said the project will also provide environmental education to youths, teachers, and leaders, as well as strategies for reducing environmental pollution and carbon emissions while generating income for participating communities.

Akech advised the Chief Administrative Officer to mobilise extension workers to support schools and ensure the project succeeds.

The Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal Foundation was launched on 21 February 2026 to promote development within the community.
