Lira district gets female vice chairperson after 20 years

Lira District Council has approved a female vice chairperson for the first time in 20 years following the appointment of new district executives.

During a council meeting held on 19/05/2026 to constitute the executive committee, the LCV Chairperson of Lira District, RCM Okello Orik, appointed Jane Achola, the female councilor representing Barr Sub-county, as the district vice chairperson.

Other appointments included Isaac Newton Bua, the male youth councilor, as Secretary for Aministration , Finance and Administration; Bonny Omara, the councilor for Agweng subcounty, as Secretary for Works, Production and Technological Services and Joyce Amule, the female councilor for Aromo subcounty, as Secretary for Social and Community Based Services.

Speaking shortly after the appointments, Okello Orik called for unity and teamwork among councilors. He said his appointments reflected fairness and inclusiveness, noting that both Erute North and Erute South were represented on the executive committee.

He urged the newly appointed leaders to remain committed to service delivery and seek guidance whenever necessary, warning that any executive member who fails to perform would be dropped.

The Speaker of Lira District Council, Moses Otim, expressed optimism that the current council would perform well, saying many of the councilors have experience in different professional fields that can help improve service delivery in the district.

The newly appointed executives pledged to work hard and asked fellow councilors to support them in delivering services to the people.

Jane Achola now becomes the first female vice chairperson of Lira District since Rebecca Otengo of Adekokwok Sub-county, who served in the position between 2002 and 2006.
