Lira Farmers Anticipate Massive Harvest as Solar Irrigation Pays Off

Farmers at Dam Odoca Solar Irrigation Scheme in Aromo Sub-County, Lira District, are anticipating a record-breaking debut harvest following the successful planting of their first crop cycle under a new solar-powered irrigation network.

The project’s success was highlighted during an inspection visit by officials from the Ministry of Water and Environment, who visited Barpii Parish to assess the operational impact of the Multipurpose and Bulk Water Development Project for Northern Uganda.

Patrick Okuja, Marketing and production Director for Dam Odoca Farmer’s Group, revealed that the group planted seven acres of cabbages and watermelons in May 2026.

He is hopeful that with the automated water supply insulating crops from harsh weather, the group expects to generate over 50 million Ugandan shillings in profit from this initial harvest.

Okuja contrasted the venture with traditional rain-fed crops like soybeans and groundnuts, which historically yielded under two million shillings per season.

Lira District Agricultural Officer incharge Aromo Sub-County, Denis Owani noted that while some local landholders initially hesitated to adopt modern irrigation, the thriving green fields at Odoca Dam are rapidly changing perceptions.

Owani pledged to utilize the site as a regional demonstration hub to help transition surrounding communities from climate-vulnerable subsistence farming to high-value commercial production.

Assistant Manager for Bulk Water Projects at the Ministry, Eng. Emmanuel Omutojo urged the group to reinvest a portion of their initial profits to expand their farm and harvest.

He urged the Farmer to use part of their profit in long-term equipment maintenance, as ministry will handle bulk machine maintenance.

The team leader for Templar Engineering Consultant Ltd, Raphael Owiny noted that direct supply agreements have already been established with regional wholesale buyers to secure profitable market rates for the upcoming harvest.

Handed over to the community in June 2026, the 782 million shilling facility at Barpii Parish, Aromo Sub County was jointly financed by the Government of Uganda and UK Export Finance.
