A total of 19.7 kilometres of wetlands have been recovered in Aduku Sub-county, Kwania district, as government begins demarcating wetlands to curb encroachment.

According to Kwania District Senior Environment Officer Jimmy Okweny, about 30 percent of wetlands in the district have been degraded due to human activities.

Okweny says Aboko Parish and Teiroro are among the areas worst affected by wetland degradation in Aduku Sub-county, where some residents have constructed houses and carried out other activities in wetlands.

He says the district, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Environment, has started demarcating wetlands in different parts of the district to protect them from further destruction.

However, some residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the exercise, claiming that the demarcation has forced some of them out of their homes.

Some locals claim government demarcated part of their land as wetland.

Some Local leaders in Ayabi Town Council and Aduku Sub-county say they were not involved in the demarcation process, making it difficult for them to explain the exercise to affected communities.

Some of the local leaders say they were not involved in the demarcation exercise.

When contacted, Kwania Deputy Resident District Commissioner Abraham Aturu said he had received the complaints and pledged to organise a meeting involving community members and local leaders to ensure the demarcation exercise is conducted fairly.
