Midwife, nurse among four arrested over Alango Health Centre III theft

Security in Otuke District has arrested two health workers and two other people to aid investigations into the alleged theft of medical equipment from Alango Health Centre III.

The suspects are a midwife at the facility, Dorothy Alaro; nurse Tom Ogwal; Alaro’s husband, Dicken Ali; and Robinson Kituli, who allegedly told another person that he knew where the stolen equipment was being kept.

The Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Otuke, Isaac Opio Opeo, said the arrests followed an intelligence-led report received by the GISO of Alango Sub-County after a tip-off that two wheelchairs and an oxygen concentrator had been stolen from the maternity ward.

Opio said the equipment was allegedly stolen on September 11, 2026, but the incident was not immediately reported to police by the facility in-charge.

He said investigations established that Ali allegedly stole the equipment, while Alaro was arrested for allegedly bringing her husband to the health facility, where he later stole the items.

Opio said Ogwal was arrested because he was responsible for keeping the equipment in the maternity department, while Kituli was arrested to aid investigations into the whereabouts of the stolen items.

He said a search conducted by security led to the recovery of one wheelchair and the oxygen concentrator, while efforts to recover the other missing equipment are ongoing.

Opio blamed the facility in-charge for negligence of duty, saying she failed to properly supervise staff, which he said contributed to the theft.

He also cautioned health workers against stealing drugs and medical equipment, warning that those involved would be arrested and prosecuted.
